scarlet macaws, ecuador

At the entrance to a small cave in Ecuador's Yasuni National Park, a pair of Scarlet Macaws drink mineral-rich water seeping from an escarpment. Attracted by the promise of a medicinal soil, many species of parrots visit specific sites within the rainforest each day. Consuming this aids in the digestion of the highly acidic seeds and fruits that comprise the majority of their diets.
